Among 100 export destinations, Italy ranks first within the EU. and second globally with absorption of Greek products more than 2.27 billion euros.
What is the current state of trade relations between the two countries? How did the crisis affect us, where are we today, what are the immediate prospects?
In a generalized climate of economic recession and fiscal crisis, it seems almost paradoxical that in 2013 there was even a small increase in Greek exports. Specifically, this is an increase of 1% based on the data of January-November 2013 compared to 2012 and a turnover that currently exceeds 25 billion euros. In a generalized climate of economic recession and fiscal crisis, it seems almost paradoxical that in 2013 there was even a small increase (1%) in Greek exports to Italy.
It is characteristic that almost 10% of all Greek exports are directed to Italy, while (again based on the data January-November 2013) a further increase of 20.7% of Greek exports to Italy is confirmed, compared to the corresponding period 2012. In addition, the value of trade exchanges Greece-Italy amounts to 5.5 billion euros.
In my opinion, in a period of searching for processes of regeneration of the Greek productive fabric, it would be advisable to know better the successful export model of the neighboring country given the many common elements that we can take advantage of.
In which sectors and under what conditions do you estimate that Greek exports to Italy can increase?
A strong starting point is the Greek region. The primary sector and the secondary sector of the processing of agricultural products, in cooperation with the tertiary sector of tourism, have already acquired their own decisive role, in the new development model that our country must adopt, in order for the Greek economy to be led to sustainable and sustainable development.
Given that these rails will run sooner or later, the locomotive of growth is a strategic choice for Greek agriculture, the shift from a quantity and low cost agriculture to a quality agriculture.
For the consumer, the identity of agri-food products is summarized in quality and safety, since in fact he is looking for the branded agri-food product. Only in this way, with identity, the quality safe, Greek, agricultural products will gain the position they deserve in the markets and will contribute to the extroversion we seek in order to overturn the negative trade balance.
It would be useful to know better about Italys successful export model given the many commonalities we can take advantage of.
From then on, the first basic condition is the innovation that must be a strategic goal for all Greek companies and especially those in the primary sector.
Equally basic and necessary is the registration of agri-food products, a sector in which good work has been done in neighboring Italy and standardization follows, because only after they have an identity, quality safe, Greek, agricultural products will gain the place they deserve in the markets.
What do you consider to be the advantages and what are the disadvantages of the Greek production and export base?
The advantages start from the specialized human resources in all sectors of the economy and it is indicative the export to various countries, well-trained professionals and scientists, due to the crisis.
The main advantage of Greek production is the specialized human resources in all sectors of the economy. It is indicative the export, in various countries, of well-trained professionals and scientists, due to the crisis.
Therefore, the living factor must be the basis for the development and restructuring of the economy, with business activity moving dynamically in the direction of innovation, due to the changing conditions of market demand.
Equally, the valuable product of the Greek land remains a great asset and therefore agriculture can develop into a solid basis for the development of the secondary and tertiary sectors of the economy.
The disadvantages, on the contrary, are summarized in the characteristics of the Greek pathogenesis, which starts from the insufficiency due to the lack of competent standardization and therefore certification of the products. Also, the loss of relevance, which is often determined by the lack of cooperation of producers with each other, but also with traders and the Greek State, which ultimately reflects the characteristic lack of a favorable framework for the development of promotional activities.
