We are pleased to share that Spyros-Nikitas Tsamichas was honored to be selected as a delegate for the European Youth Energy Forum 2024 in Budapest.

As Spyros-Nikitas quotes:

“My team and I successfully presented our position paper and comprehensive proposal addressing one of the most pressing socio-economic issues in Europe—energy poverty—with the introduction of our initiative, the Framework for University-Powered Energy Communities (UPEC).

Energy poverty impacts over 41 million Europeans, severely affecting the health, well-being, and financial stability of countless households, particularly those in low-income brackets. Traditional solutions have struggled to reach those who need them most due to a lack of localized strategies, resources, and community involvement. UPEC aims to bridge these gaps by empowering communities through a collaborative model that leverages the expertise and enthusiasm of university students.”

The UPEC Framework Explained:

At its core, UPEC is an innovative approach that brings universities and communities together to tackle energy poverty through education, renewable energy integration, and community support. The UPEC framework operates on a multi-phase strategy that combines academic research, practical applications, and community-based action:

1.Community Engagement and Outreach: The foundation of UPEC lies in robust community engagement. Local authorities, universities, NGOs, and specialized energy experts form a network to identify areas most affected by energy poverty. This phase focuses on establishing trust, partnerships, and securing initial funding to launch the program effectively.

2.Student Involvement and Practical Training: UPEC harnesses the potential of university students from various disciplines—engineering, environmental science, law, economics, and social sciences. Students receive targeted training that equips them with the necessary skills to conduct energy audits, engage with residents, and develop energy-saving solutions tailored to community needs. This hands-on experience not only aids the communities but also provides students with invaluable real-world expertise that enhances their academic and professional development.

3.Energy Audits and Solution Development: Under the supervision of faculty members and industry professionals, students conduct detailed energy assessments to identify gaps and potential areas for improvement. Solutions can range from basic energy-saving measures, such as promoting energy-efficient lighting and appliances, to more advanced projects like installing solar panels or other renewable energy technologies. This phase also involves financial assessments and applications for funding to implement these solutions, drawing from EU grants, municipal support, or private investment.

4.Sustainable Community Management: Once solutions are implemented, UPEC shifts to ongoing community management to ensure sustainability. A dedicated community coordinator, supported by student volunteers, oversees the operation of energy systems, provides continued support, and holds training sessions to increase energy literacy. This ongoing management ensures the community remains resilient, adaptive, and committed to continuous improvement in energy practices.

Key Benefits and Impact of UPEC:

•Empowering Low-Income Households: UPEC aims to make energy solutions more accessible to low-income households that are often left behind by broader energy programs. By promoting local renewable energy initiatives and engaging directly with residents, the framework ensures that solutions are inclusive and equitable.

Educational and Professional Growth: University students gain hands-on experience through their involvement in UPEC, applying theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. This engagement fosters a new generation of energy-conscious professionals who are skilled in implementing sustainable energy solutions.

Community Resilience and Sustainability: The ongoing support provided by UPEC ensures that energy poverty is addressed not just as a temporary fix, but as a long-term solution. By building local expertise and promoting energy literacy, communities can manage and adapt their energy practices over time, fostering resilience and self-sufficiency.

Metrics for Success:

Our goals include achieving a 15-25% reduction in energy costs for participating households, securing partnerships with at least three local authorities within the first year, and maintaining a 70% community opt-in rate. Additionally, we aim for 100% student participation in allocated programs, with 90% successfully completing their training and academic requirements.

I am excited to see the UPEC proposal featured at the EYEN stand at COP29 Azerbaijan, where it will continue to contribute to international discussions and showcase how youth-led, university-supported initiatives can pave the way for sustainable and inclusive solutions to energy poverty.

ITALY has long been a valuable economic partner of Greece and undoubtedly the most important destination for Greek exports. The neighbour accounts for 12% of Greek exports and is consistently in the top four in imports.

The Greek-Italian Chamber of Athens is a constant partner in the investment race, an ally and advisor to Greek and Italian businesses. With a presence in 65 countries around the world, through the Association of Italian Chambers of Commerce and more than 1,000 members, it has been working for the expansion of economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries for over six decades, facilitating the implementation of investments.

At the same time, it continues for the second decade the highly successful and internationally recognised programme “Exporting more Greece to 83 bilateral Italian Chambers in 65 countries”, being the main partner of Italian companies operating in Greece and of Greek companies in the neighbouring country.

PROSPECTLY, the Greek-Italian Chamber of Athens announced the signing of a Protocol of Cooperation with the Industrialists’ Association of Naples, which provides that the two institutions will join forces and work together to further strengthen economic relations. For the implementation of the Protocol of Cooperation, the Hellenic-Italian Chamber of Athens and the Association of Industrialists of Naples have agreed to create an office – antenna for the member companies and consultants of the Hellenic-Italian Chamber of Athens. This office is expected to become a reference point in Southern Italy and to act as an information hub for investment opportunities in the Greek market.

ITALIAN investments, in recent years, have been strengthening the dynamics of the domestic market and upgrading Greece’s position in the global energy and connectivity maps.

The LARGEST international provider of telecommunications interconnection services in Italy and among the top ten in the world, the Italian Sparkle, in 2021, in the midst of a pandemic, commissioned Metamorfosis II, the first green data center in Greece, while it recently completed the laying of the Blue Med cable in the Mediterranean, landing it in Chania.

The laying of the Green Med submarine cable is also expected, which is expected to create an innovative fibre-optic network corridor to connect, via an alternative low-latency network, Italy with Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece and Turkey, before extending further into the Mediterranean. In addition, RENCO SpA and TERNA S.A. are proceeding, following a competitive tender process, with the construction of Microsoft’s first privately invested Data Center in Greece.

IN THE ENERGY SECTOR, Italian giants such as Snam and Italgas have for years been in control of critical energy infrastructure in Greece, while major Italian groups such as Edison and Enel Green Power, among others, are systematically investing in green energy, with onshore and especially offshore wind farms and photovoltaic parks.

Edison is also working to promote the EastMed pipeline and is attempting to retain Elpedison, one of the largest independent power and gas generators and providers in Greece, although HELLENiQ ENERGY has a different view.

The Italian group Renco SpA, following its successful participation in the construction of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, has also expressed interest in participating in the completion and extensions of the project.

The Greek investment foray in Italy has also begun, with the major investment of Mytilineos Group, which includes investments of over 3 billion and a portfolio of 180 projects with a total capacity of 3.59 GW, with investments in solar energy and the crucial issue of energy storage. And the Olympia Group’s Sunlight company is active in Italy, through its subsidiaries Sunlight Italy, and Sunlight European Battery Assembly (SEBA) with facilities in Verona. The company, in 2022, acquired 80% of Italian PBM.

Several infrastructure projects in Greece also have an ITALIAN stamp, with Italian companies undertaking projects in cooperation with Greek companies, such as the joint venture between ABAX, the Italian GHELLA and the French ALSTOM, which was the successful bidder in the tender for the construction of Line 4 of the Athens Metro, for the section “Also Veikou – Goudi”.

This project, featuring the latest #CBTC driverless control system, represents an important step forward for urban mobility in Thessaloniki. With 87 days remaining until the first submissions, as recently noted by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation Christos Staikouras and the Deputy Minister Nikolaos Tachiaos, the countdown to the project’s inauguration by the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has officially begun.

This Metro system is expected to enhance transportation in Thessaloniki and strengthen the city’s position as a development hub in Greece. We are glad to provide our legal expertise in assisting this endeavor and are happy to be working alongside Barbara Ferrari from Hitachi Rail on this project.

The strong Greek-Italian economic relations are stable and sustainable By Cav. Avv. Ioannis Tsamicha*

With the cautious forecasts for 2% growth in 2024 confirmed by the OECD, the Greek economy continues on its growth trajectory, which is expected to accelerate in 2025 (2.5%). The Greek economy appears to be reaping the benefits of real wage increases, rising employment and, most importantly, strong inflows of tourists supporting income and spending.

With fiscal consolidation, productivity and attracting investment remaining key challenges, Greece needs to achieve sustained strong economic growth by reducing debt in view of high spending needs, further reducing the regulatory burden and, of course, by expanding and improving the quality of human capital training.

Italy is Greece’s most important economic partner over time

Throughout its modern economic history, Greece has had a stable economic partner – Italy, which has been a catalyst for the performance of the domestic economy. Italian businesses consistently vote for Greece, with the neighbouring country being the top destination for Greek exports in 2023, as 12% of Greek exports are directed there, while it is also high in the top four in the list of imports. The Hellenic-Italian Chamber of Athens, continues its successful and internationally recognized program “We export more Greece to 85 Bilateral Italian Chambers in 65 countries”, being the main partner of Italian companies operating in the Greek market and of Greek companies in Italy. With a presence in 65 countries around the world through the Association of Italian Chambers of Commerce and more than 1000 members, it has been working to expand economic and commercial cooperation between the two countries for the last 60 years, facilitating the implementation of investments.

In the last decade, the investment interest of Italian companies has been almost monopolized by the energy sector as a whole. The Italian groups, Edison, Enel Green Power and Italgas, among others, are aiming to expand their investments in green energy with onshore and especially offshore wind farms and photovoltaic parks.

Edison, in fact, reportedly wants to retain Elpedison, one of the largest independent power and gas generators and providers of electricity and natural gas in Greece, in its assets, following its rumoured divorce with HELLENiQ ENERGY. Along with DEPA, Edison is also working to promote the EastMed pipeline, while Italian group Renco SpA, following its successful participation in the construction of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, has also expressed interest in participating in its construction. In addition, RENCO SpA and TERNA S.A. are proceeding with the construction of the first Microsoft Data Center in Greece following a competitive tender process.

Also of great importance for bilateral economic relations is the financial landing of Mytilineos Group in Italy, which includes giant investments of more than 3 billion and a portfolio of 180 projects with a total capacity of 3.59 GW, with investments in solar energy and storage.

The cooperation between Greece and Italy is expected to intensify in the coming period, in the context of sustainable development and the expansion of the energy mix, offering a unique opportunity for our country to emerge as an energy hub in the Eastern Mediterranean and a catalyst for the achievement of the EU’s netzero target by 2050, enhancing the overall dynamics of the Greek economy.

Even in the case of the two seemingly competing energy projects vying for European funding, the Greece-Egypt Interconnection, which will transfer green energy from Egypt to Greece and then to Northern Europe via a submarine cable, and the Green Vein, with a capacity of 3 GW, which will cover a distance of 2,800 km to Italy, covering about 5% of its maximum energy demand, there is potential for constructive cooperation, as they can function in a complementary manner.

It is clear, after the recent energy crisis, where we should aim to improve the country’s competitive position, with the energy sector, especially smart and green energy, high technology and human capital improvement being the spearhead and the expansion of economic cooperation with Italy steadily growing.

We are delighted to share our experience attending the 28th Annual Economist Government Roundtable, thanks to an invitation from Edison Hellas. The event, themed “Spiralling through the conflicts in search of opportunities | Geopolitics • Environment • Technology,” brought together high-ranking government officials, prominent personalities from politics, business, finance, international institutions, and academia in Athens from July 2nd to 4th, 2024.

The year 2024 marks a pivotal moment, as almost half of the world’s population goes to the polls, with elections in more than 50 nations influencing global politics for years to come. This significant year will test democratic rule, impacting an estimated 4 billion people. Amid escalating geopolitical conflicts, environmental challenges, and economic uncertainties, opportunities for a more equitable world emerge, primarily driven by technological disruption. Europe, demonstrating resilience, will see a new mandate set by June’s European Parliament election.

At this roundtable, we engaged in meaningful and constructive dialogue aimed at navigating the present and preparing for the future. We gained invaluable insights from top analysts and leaders, understanding how the outcomes of these elections and current global challenges will shape the world. The discussions underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing these issues and leveraging technological advancements for a better future.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Edison Hellas for this remarkable opportunity and look forward to applying the knowledge and insights gained to our work at Tsamichas Law Firm.
